BANGKOK, ThailandPTTEP and INPEX have agreed to jointly conduct a study on carbon storage potential in the northern Gulf of Thailand.

The initiative is part of an international collaboration between Thailand’s Department of Mineral Fuels and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC). The study will form the basis for a potential CCS Hub in the Eastern Economic Corridor of Thailand (EEC).

PTTEP CEO Montri Rawanchaikul said, “We have unique knowledge in the subsurface of the Gulf of Thailand and experiences from our CCS initiative at the Arthit gas field. Combined with INPEX’s international experience in CCS project implementation, we believe the study outcome will equip Thailand with necessary insights and information to outline a CCS infrastructure and development plan…”

At the same time, PTTEP is leading a feasibility study of PTT Group’s Eastern Thailand CCS Hub initiative in the EEC, targeting reduced CO2 emissions from the group’s operations onshore in Rayong and Chonburi provinces and nearby industrial areas using CCS technology and storage potential in the Gulf of Thailand.

At Arthit, the FEED phase has finished, and PTTEP expects to start CCS operations in 2027, with a goal of cutting CO2 from gas production at the field by 700,000 to 1 MM metric tons annually.
