DOHA, Qatar – Qatar Petroleum (QP) has contracted eight jackups for development drilling at the offshore North Field expansion project.
All are due to mobilize to be ready for drilling activities from January 2020 onwards.
Qatari contractor Gulf Drilling International (GDI) will provide six of the rigs, with Northern Offshore Drilling Operations in the US supplying the other two.
Seadrill commented that under its existing strategic cooperation agreement (SCA) with GDI, one of its rigs is currently operating in Qatar, and it is working with GDI on an agreement to provide up to five additional jackups under the terms of the SCA.
QP’s plans for the project include drilling and completion of 80 wells from eight wellhead platforms. The company contracted McDermott to construct and install the jackets last month.
The new program is designed to provide extra feedstock for Qatar LNG, lifting capacity from the present 77 MMt/y to 110 MMt/yr.
