PERTH, Australia – BHP has discovered hydrocarbons with the first of three planned deepwater wells offshore Trinidad and Tobago.
The Transocean ultra-deepwater drillshipDeepwater Invictus spudded the Bélé-1 well on March 2. Drilling continues.
All three wells will be on BHP’s Northern licences around its earlier Bongos discovery.
The company’sdeepwater Trion-2DEL appraisal well spudded last November in the Mexican sector encountered oil in line with expectations. A subsequent downdip side track found oil and water, also as predicted.
Following the positive results, the partners have committed to an additional appraisal well (3DEL) which will likely be drilled later this year on the Trion block to assist delineation and characterization of the resource.
In the US Gulf of Mexico, BHP added, Murphy Oil has started pre-front-end engineering design on a development of last year’s Samurai discovery.
