VANCOUVER, Canada – Odfjell Drilling’s semisubmersible Deepsea Stavanger has spudded the Brulpadda-1AX re-entry well in block 11B/12B offshore South Africa. Total is the operator.
The location is in 1,432 m (4,698 ft) of water in the Outeniqua basin, roughly 175 km (109 mi) offshore the country’s southern coast, in an area with a proven petroleum system from the nearby Sable and Oryx oil fields.
According to partnerAfrica Energy Corp., Brulpadda is one of five similar submarine fan prospects. with direct hydrocarbon indicators defined from 2D seismic surveys over the Paddavissie Fairway in 2001 and 2005.
Estimated potential resources at Brulpadda are more than 500 MMbbl, with follow-on potential should drilling prove to be successful.
The target is in a mid-Cretaceous deep marine fan sandstone system within combined stratigraphic/structural closure. Drilling and evaluation could last 85 days, with a gross budget of around $154 million.
Other partners in the block are Qatar Petroleum and Canadian Natural Resources.
