OSLO, Norway – Total has made a small gas discovery in the southern Norwegian Sea, 40 km (25 mi) southeast of the Kristin field.

The semisubmersibleScarabeo 8 drilled exploration well 6406/6-6 S and appraisal well 6406/6-6 A in 265 m (869 ft) water depth, the aims being to prove petroleum in Mid-Jurassic and Lower Jurassic reservoir rocks.

In the primary target, the initial well encountered gas in 3-m (10-ft) sandstone layer, according to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD), and traces of gas deeper in the middle part of the Ile formation, but with poor reservoir quality.

Technical issues with the second well prevented measurements being taken to confirm a gas column.

The NPD estimates recoverable volumes in the 0.4-2.5 MMcmoe range. Both wells have since been P&A’d.

TheScarabeo 8 is now drilling wildcat well 24/9-14 S in production license 869 in the central Norwegian North Sea for operator Aker BP.
