ABERDEEN, UK -- Statoil has contracted KCA Deutag to provide drilling services at the Kvitebjørn field in the Norwegian North Sea.

The contract carries a primary period of two years, extendable by two further periods of two years each.
At Kvitebjørn, the use of managed pressure drilling (MPD) technology is needed to allow drilling in a depleted reservoir at a subsurface depth of 4,000 m (13,123 ft), with high temperatures and high pressure.

KCA Deutag has collaborated with Statoil to adapt this technique for the field. The company has operated drilling services on the Kvitebjørn platform in block 34/11, east of Gullfaks, since its installation in summer 2003.
