Diamond exercises option for third drillship

Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc. says it has exercised an option with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd. to build a third ultra-deepwater drillship.

HOUSTON – Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc. says it has exercised an option with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd. to build a third ultra-deepwater drillship. Total cost is estimated at $610 million with delivery in 2Q 2014.

Like its previously announced sister ships, this will be dynamically positioned, have a seven ram BOP, dual activity capability, five mud pumps, and a maximum hook-load capacity of 1,250 tons (1,134 metric tons). The unit will be designed for operations in up to 12,000 ft (3,678 m) of water.
