BAKU, Azerbaijan — bp is preparing to drill a new appraisal well on the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli oil field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.

This will acquire data on known deep-lying gas reservoirs beneath the oil on the field’s southern flank. Well A22z will be drilled from the Chirag platform as a sidetrack from the existing A22 injector well, with a projected total depth of about 4,500 m.

Data acquired could improve the structural understanding of the area and the pressures in the deep reservoirs.

Drilling should take about three months to complete, with extensive logging prior to installing gauges to measure pressure data.

Elsewhere in the sector, the semisub Keydar Aliev has spud the SDX-8 exploration well on the eastern flank of the Shah Deniz gas field for bp and its co-venturers, with a planned total depth of about 7,000 m.

The aim is to strengthen understanding of the drillability, producibility and resource potential of the deeper horizons beneath the currently producing reservoirs in this part of the field.

Well operations could continue for about a year, with a further testing program potentially extending the duration.
