KOKSTAD, Norway – BP has notified Odfjell Drilling of early termination of a contract for the semisubmersible Deepsea Aberdeen. This was originally due to expire in April 2022.
Odfjell, which will receive compensation from BP, has secured new work for the rig from Wintershall Dea offshore Norway, with the program due to start in February or March 2021.
In the Norwegian Sea, the Deepsea Aberdeen will drill the Dvalin North exploration well close to the Dvalin gas field development, and an appraisal well on this year’s Bergknapp discovery. It will also drill at least two infill wells on the Vega field, a subsea tieback to the Gjøa semisubmersible production platform in the North Sea.
The contract, with a probable duration of around 300 days, includes options to drill further wells for Wintershall Dea and incentives to Odfjell for safe and efficient operations.
In addition, the two companies have entered into a long-term frame agreement covering potential rig needs in the future.
The Deepsea Aberdeen is a sixth generation, dual derrick semi, designed to operate in harsh weather conditions. It will be located at the CCB Yard outside Bergen in preparation for the new campaign.
Equinor will use Odfjell’s semisub Deepsea Atlantic for a wildcat well in block 34/7 west of the Borg discovery and east of the Statfjord field in North Sea license PL 089. This follows approval from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.
