CAIRO, Egypt – Cheiron has placed a successful appraisal well on the GNN oil discovery offshore Egypt on long-term production.

The field, estimated to hold 260 MMbbl, is in the Geisum and Tawila West concession in the Gulf of Suez, managed by a joint operating company, PertoGulf Misr, owned by the Egyptian General Petroleum Co., Cheiron, and Kufpec.

According to Cheiron, the GNN-4 well, which tested at initial rates of more than 2,000 b/d, was drilled as a high-angle wellbore from the Geisum D platform. It is currently producing through existing field infrastructure.

The Geisum oil field, with 32 active wells and an associated onshore plant at Zeit Bay, has been on production since the 1980s.

GNN was discovered in July 2019 by the GNN-3 exploration well, drilled in a separate fault block northeast of the Geisum field. It encountered close to 500 ft (152 m) of good-quality net oil pay in the Nukhul formation.

The GNN-4 well will be followed by two further wells drilled from the D platform into the southern part of the discovery. Development will then shift to the northern area where further drilling is planned, along with the tieback of the GNN-3 well for early production.

The full field development will use the Geisum facilities and will also involve the installation of new platform and pipeline infrastructure.

According to Cheiron, this was the first find in the Nukhul formation in the Geisum area, opening up exploration potential both within the concession and in neighboring acreage.
