PAPENDRECHT, the Netherlands – Royal Boskalis Westminster and Van Oord have a letter of intent to undertake rock placement services for the Nord Stream 2 project in the Baltic Sea via a joint venture.
Nord Stream 2 AG, which awarded the €250-million ($285-million) contract, plans to construct twin 1,200-km (745-mi) gas pipelines from Russia to central Europe.
Rock must be placed at various locations along the pipeline route to level the seabed and to protect the pipelines.
The contract scope includes sourcing of rock from quarries in the Baltic region. Boskalis and Van Oord will perform the work under a 50/50 partnership during 2018-19, using specialist fallpipe vessels.
Boskalis also managed rock placement for the first Nord Stream pipelines during 2010-12.
