SAN DONATO MILANESE, Italy – Post-drilling studies on the deepwater Merakes-1 discovery offshore Indonesia suggest significant gas upside potential, according to operator Eni.
Merakes is in the East Sepinggan block which the company operates with an 85% interest. The location is offshore East Kalimantan (Borneo), 170 km (105.6 mi) south of the Bontang LNG plant and 35 km (21.7 mi) south of theJangkrik field development.
The studies upgrade the potential of Merakes from the previous estimate of 1.3 tcf to 2 tcf. Last October the well was drilled in 1,372 m (4,501 ft) of water, intersecting a 60-m (197-ft) section of good-quality sandstone.
Eni plans to advance appraisal with a view to a fasttrack development, optimizing synergies with the Jangkrik project.
