KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Petronas’ first floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, PFLNG SATU has started the 2,120-nautical mile journey from the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) shipyard in Okpo, South Korea, to the Kanowit gas field, 180 km (112 mi) offshore Sarawak.
The vessel measures 365 m (1,198 ft) in length, 60 m (197 ft) in width, and 33 m (108 ft) in height. It is designed to operate in water depths between 70 m and 200 m (230 ft and 656 ft) and has a processing capacity of 1.2 million metric tons of LNG per year.
Datuk Abdullah Karim, Petronas’ advisor of Global LNG Project – Project Delivery and Technology, said: “The sail away ofPFLNG SATU is an achievement everyone in Petronas, DSME, and Technip can be proud of. Congratulations and I look forward to the next phase of the project at the Kanowit gas field for the successful startup of PFLNG SATU.”
Construction began with the official steel cutting in June 2013 followed by the launching of the hull on April 2014. In 4Q 2015, Petronas announced the vessel had achieved a 95% overall progress in its construction with the successful installation of 22 modular systems within and on the topsides of the floating facility.
Petronas’ President and CEO of Pacific NorthWest LNG En. Adnan Zainal Abidin said that a total of 18 million man-hours have been clocked to achieve the technological and engineering aspirations of a floating LNG facility.
