CO2 carrier suited to offshore injection, EOR support

ELSINORE, Denmark — Knud E Hansen has developed a new design of tanker capable of transporting captured CO₂ from industrial emitters, such as the concrete sector, or CO₂ released during the production of methanol and ammonia for use as shipping fuels.

The captured CO₂ would then be stored in offshore oil fields for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) or injected into decommissioned fields for permanent storage.

The company’s CO₂ carrier is a DP2 ship with an anchor-loading system, storage tanks and transfer equipment for offloading and optional heating of CO₂ to pressure and temperature for the subsurface injection site.

Its propulsion system’s `twin-skeg’ design features two contra-rotating propellers, said to lead to fuel savings while also supporting station keeping performance.
