HELSINKI, Finland – Wärtsilä and Simon Møkster Shipping will jointly undertake a feasibility study on the use of ammonia as the main fuel in dual-fuel engines, where LNG is the alternative fuel.
They plan tests on the offshore supply vessel Stril Pioneer, which currently operates with Wärtsilä 32DF dual-fuel engines, with LNG as its primary fuel.
Their goal is to show that converting vessels for dual ammonia – LNG operation can be performed efficiently and safely.
According to Anne Jorunn Møkster, CEO of Simon Møkster, this will help the company in its quest to cut CO2 emissions from its vessel fleet by 40% by 2030.
Using a blend of ammonia and LNG, CO2 emissions from the combustion process should be substantially reduced, the partners claim.
