Shell selects First Subsea for Appomattox mooring connectors

Shell Offshore Inc. has contracted First Subsea Ltd. to supply Ballgrab subsea mooring line connectors for the Appomattox development in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.

The semisubmersible four-column production platform will be moored in around 7,200 ft (2,195 m) of water using 16 Series III Ballgrab subsea mooring connectors (SMC) arranged in four x four clusters. The SMCs are manufactured in compliance withAmerican Bureau of Shipping (ABS) 2009 approval for special subsea mooring connectors, First Subsea said.
The company claims it is the only manufacturer of offshore mooring connectors to achieve ABS’ approval for the design and manufacture of large-scale R4 grade forgings more than 560 mm (22 in.) in diameter.
