ABERDEEN, UK  Britain’s National Subsea Centre (NSC) has formed a partnership with subsea/marine service provider SeaFlo Consultancy.

SeaFlo has joined the center as an anchor partner, and it will supply funding for an Asset Digital Twin Laboratory (the ADT-LAB). This will bring together subsea asset engineers and research computer scientists to research, develop and deploy digital twins to anticipate maintenance needs long-term for subsea structures, equipment and systems.

Unlike traditional reactive maintenance approaches, the digital twin will help companies use proactive asset maintenance, enabled by digital technologies and data-driven decision-making, to reduce their operating costs,

There is a requirement for physical offshore inspections every three to five years, the NSC said. However, the proposed digital twin could reduce this frequency through real-time predictive data modeling, structural integrity, fatigue and life-cycle FMECA condition monitoring analysis.

The partnership runs for an initial three years. To ensure compliance with industry recommended best practices, the ADT-LAB will acquire ISO 55001 certification via an agreement between SeaFlo and Bureau Veritas.

SeaFlo individuals will be based at the NSC, bringing access to relevant datasets, engineering knowledge of asset models and subsea to marine asset domain expertise.
