WESTHILL, UKDOF Subsea has recovered a 4-in. rigid pipeline from the UK North Sea as part of a decommissioning project, using an MDL back-deck spread.

Maritime Developments Ltd. (MDL) deployed an MDL two-track tensioner from the Skandi Skansen to support retrieval of 12 km (7.5 mi) of pipe from a water depth of around 115 m (377 ft).

In addition, the company provided angled grillage for efficient sea-fastening during mob/demobilization and to assist height requirements for the shear cutter, used to cut lengths of pipe.

Items recovered included water injection, gas lift and production pipelines. Once on deck, these were cut into 13-m (42.6-ft) sections for subsequent disposal onshore.

The TTS-2/140 Series tensioner ensured a 20-metric ton (22-ton) line pull, with a pivoting top track to enable positioning of the pipes.

MDL also provided entry and exit rollers to support passing of the pipes into the firing line for cutting on board, helping the client execute the program ahead of schedule.

The company’s other recent offshore jobs include replacement of rigid pipeline in an environmentally-protected area off the US West Coast, and installation of a 25-mm fiber optic cable offshore Mexico.
