Aker Solutions and ABB will conduct the first-phase FEED for the 560-MW GreenVolt floating offshore wind project in the central UK North Sea, 80 km from Peterhead, eastern Scotland.
This is a joint venture between Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy.
Aker Solutions will lead design of the high-voltage offshore substation (HVAC), the overall system design and work on the onshore HV equipment.
The work scope includes the engineering design of the electrical infrastructure; integration of renewable energy from the floating wind farm that will provide power to North Sea oil and gas facilities and the UK grid; design of the large jacket substructure; and planning for the transport and installation of the substation.
ABB will lead the electrical infrastructure development, including integrated automation and telecommunications systems for the offshore platform and onshore substation. It will also oversee integration of renewable energy into the grid, deploying power and energy management systems to optimize operations.
GreenVolt is due to be fully operational in 2029, eventually supplying 1.5 TWh/year to the UK grid.
Aker Solutions will engage teams at its offices in London and Aberdeen, Fornebu and Mumbai.
ABB is presently supporting seven UK offshore wind projects with a combined capacity of 9 GW, including Dogger Bank, providing automation, electrification and digital services to lower opex costs and help deliver reliable integration of power to the grid.
