Lloyd’s Register and Samsung Heavy Industries have signed a memorandum of understanding at Offshore Korea 2024 on the joint development of an FPSO for green ammonia.
This would employ renewable energy to power electrolysis of seawater in order to produce green hydrogen.
The latter would be combined with nitrogen and synthesized to produce green ammonia that could be readily offloaded to ammonia carriers. A development could be linked to offshore wind farms in Europe.
Samsung will perform the design for the FPSO, with Lloyd’s Register undertaking a review of the deliverables and providing technical advice for further design development.
