RWE has contracted DeepOcean to support the Nordseecluster A offshore wind project in the German sector of the North Sea.
The development will be constructed in two phases, Nordseecluster A and Nordseecluster B, with a total capacity of 1.6 GW, about 50 km north of the island of Juist.
Last August, RWE designated DeepOcean as its preferred supplier of subsea installation services for Nordseecluster A. The company now has a firm order that covers preparatory work and transport/installation of all inter-array cables, including trenching, topside pull-ins and terminations for the initial build-out phase.
In total, DeepOcean will install 185 km of 66-kV aluminum and copper cables to connect the 44 offshore wind turbines of Nordseecluster A (total capacity 660 MW).
Construction at sea is due to start next year. By early 2027, all the wind turbines should be connected to the grid. The second phase, Nordseecluster B, adding a further 900 MW of capacity, should start commercial operations in early 2029.
The company’s Aberdeen office will manage the program, with support from other offices in the UK and Norway. Offshore preparations and pre-installation surveys are due to start in second-quarter 2025, with the main works getting underway at the start of 2026.
DeepOcean will use three vessels for the campaign.
