RIO DE JANEIRO, BrazilPetrobras has signed a protocol of intentions with the Rio de Janeiro state government on joint feasibility studies for a pilot offshore wind energy project.

The agreement allows for alignment of the project with state programs and policies and the promotion of actions to improve the local region close to where the pilot will be implemented.

Petrobas added that it planned to use the project to test and qualify new technologies, in part to help address the challenges of future commercial-scale offshore wind developments.

This is one of the regions in Brazil with the greatest potential for offshore wind electricity generation, the company added, with further potential to be integrated into decarbonization of its E&P activities.

Since 2020, the company has been measuring the wind potential using LiDAR technology on the Autonomous Drilling Platform (PRA-1) in the Campos Basin.

Last December, Petrobras and Rio de Janeiro published a protocol of intent concerning a joint study for a pilot CO2 capture and storage hub in the north of Rio de Janeiro that could store 100,000 t/year of CO2.
