EDINBURGH, UK — The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) is calling for innovative solutions to support faster and lower-risk development of offshore wind.

EMEC, based in Orkney, northern Scotland, is making available initial funding of up to £300,000 ($376.8 million) under its Offshore Wind R&I Programme, which is sponsored by the West of Orkney Windfarm partnership.

Last year Crown Estate Scotland awarded the partners seabed rights to develop the project over an area 30 km west of the Orkney mainland and 25 km north of the Sutherland coast in mainland Scotland.

The research and innovation program will sponsor projects to help the supply chain bring new solutions to market, build operational capacity and scale up their activities.

Under the current first innovation call, due to close on Feb. 12, 2024, EMEC is requesting solutions that address at least one of the following:

  • Improved understanding of metocean conditions both at and en route to the West of Orkney Windfarm site to support decisions on installation as well as operations and maintenance; and/or
  • Design for short weather window installations to maximize installation opportunities for efficient installation.

Companies and research institutions both locally, nationally and internationally can apply for the grants.
