LUDWIGSHAFEN, Germany — BASF is in talks with Vattenfall to take a 49% stake in the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farm developments in the German North Sea.
Under a memorandum of understanding, Vattenfall will supply its share of the generated power to users in Germany, while BASF’s share will go to its chemical production sites across Europe, notably in Ludwigshafen.
The Nordlicht wind park zone is 85 km north of the island of Borkum. Nordlicht 1 will have a capacity of 980 MW and Nordlicht 2, 630 MW.
Signing of the transaction should follow during the first half of 2024. Pending the FID (expected in 2025), construction of both wind farms will start in 2026. They should be fully operational in 2028.
In 2021 BASF farmed into 49.5% of Vattenfall’s recently inaugurated Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm in the Dutch North Sea.
