LEIDSCHENDAM, theNetherlands — Ignitis Renewables has awarded Fugro a contract to acquire a geophysical survey over the location for Lithuania's first offshore wind farm site.
Fugro's Fugro Frontier vessel is already in the Baltic Sea surveying the 120-sq-km area, collecting 2,000 line km of 2D ultra-ultra-high-resolution subsurface data, along with bathymetry, sidescan sonar and magnetometer data.
The results will help the developer characterize the site and identify potential risks for an offshore wind farm project. Insights gained will inform the selection of future geotechnical investigations and the detailed ground model that Ignitis Renewables will use to determine the optimal wind turbine foundation design and locations.
The 700-MW offshore wind farm, due to start operating by 2030, will generate up to TWh of electricity annually, equivalent to up to a quarter of Lithuania's current electricity needs.
