BERGEN, Norway — Framo will provide suction bucket pumping systems for foundations for Ørsted's Greater Changhua wind farm development offshore Taiwan.
The company will manufacture the systems at its factory at Flatøy outside Bergen. Following delivery to Taiwan, Framo, in collaboration with a team from the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, will deploy personnel to oversee and manage the suction operation at sea.
The 920-MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 projects are 35 km to 60 km from the Changhua coast. Delivery is scheduled for early 2025.
According to Framo, suction bucket pumping technology is gaining traction for larger wind farms for use on jackets to address problematic and variable soil conditions. Other claimed advantages are faster installation than traditionally piled jackets, avoidance of pile driving noise and a more environmentally acceptable footprint compared with installing monopiles.
In addition, the concept is said to allow for easier decommissioning.
Previously, Framo and NGI installed 20 suction bucket jackets for Ørsted at the Borkum Riffgrund 2 wind farm in the German North Sea in 2018.
