KIRKWALL, UK  The West of Orkney Windfarm joint venture has submitted offshore consent applications to Scotland’s government for the proposed development, 30 km west of the Orkney island and 25 km north of the Sutherland coast.

Last year, the co-venturers Corio Generation, TotalEnergies and Renewable Infrastructure Development Group (RIDG) secured the development rights to an area of seabed from Crown Estate Scotland under the ScotWind leasing process.

They plan to install up to 125 fixed offshore wind turbines with a combined capacity of about 2 GW and delivering first power in 2029.

This is said to be the first ScotWind project to have applied for consent, the submission including applications under the Electricity Act 1989 and marine license applications under the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010, along with various assessments based on survey data compiled over two and a half years.

Xodus Groups’ Stromness office managed the application’s Environmental Impact Assessment report, incorporating feedback from 30 subcontractors that contributed to the process.

The West of Orkney Windfarm has an agreement with National Grid for a connection in Caithness, and the partner is also investigating an option to power the proposed Flotta Hydrogen Hub on Orkney.
