BILBAO, Spain— Avangrid, a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, has started installation of the wind turbines for the Vineyard Wind 1 project 30 miles offshore Cape Cod, New England.
Recently, the first GE Haliade-X Wind Turbine Generator was delivered from the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal to the offshore development area, transported on two 400-ft barges said to be the sole vessels anywhere capable of transporting the turbine’s large components in an upright position.
GE loaded the US-flagged Marmac from the terminal with the vertically placed tower sections, three 351-ft-long blades and a nacelle pod housing the generating components.
Once erected, the Haliade-X extends to more than 860 ft. Ultimately, 62 wind turbines will be installed generating a combined 806 MW.
