JAKARTA – BP Berau, operator of Tangguh LNG, has signed an MoU with Chubu Electric Power Co on a feasibility study for developing a carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) project.
This would start from Port of Nagoya, Japan, and culminate in CO2 storage at the Tangguh field in Berau Gulf and Bintuni Bay, offshore Papua Barat, Indonesia.
Tangguh LNG is a unitized development of six gas fields in the Wiriagar, Berau, and Muturi PSCs. It is the largest gas production complex in Indonesia, accounting for around 20% of the country’s natural gas output.
Indonesia’s government approved the development plan for Tangguh CCUS in 2021, with FEED work ongoing and planned project sanction in the near future. Tangguh has around 1.8 Gt CO2 storage capacity and could become the country’s first CCS hub for domestic and international emitters.
BP and Chubu Electric are working to support decarbonization of the area around the Port of Nagoya, Japan’s largest port in Japan in terms of cargo volume and responsible for 3% of the country’s total CO2 emissions.
Under the MoU the two companies will assess the feasibility of CO2 capture, aggregation, and liquefaction at the Port of Nagoya for export with transport via CO2 shipping for injection and CO2 storage subsurface within a CO2 storage hub at Tangguh.
