OSLO, Norway— The Windstaller Alliance of Aker Solutions, DeepOcean and Solstad Offshore has completed installation of the DemoSATH floating offshore wind turbine project in the Atlantic Ocean offshore northeast Spain.
The facilities comprise a concrete twin-hull barge structure supporting a 2-MW turbine, with a single point of mooring that allows the structure to align itself to the wind and wave direction.
Saitec Offshore developed the SATH concept and is in a partnership with RWE Offshore Wind and Kansai Electric Power (KEPCO) for the project.
Following final assembly in Bilbao, the floating wind turbine was towed 2 miles offshore for installation at the BiMEP test site in 85 m water depth, with the Windstaller Alliance managing the tow, hookup and dynamic cable installation of the turbine.
Aker Solutions provided engineering and project management support, while DeepOcean managed the cable installation from Solstad Offshore’s Normand Sapphire, which had mobilized from Norway with the cable installation spread.
The partners completed the pre-survey, tow, mooring connection, and cable installation and connection in under 14 days, with the mooring system having been pre-installed at the test site.
“We established the Windstaller Alliance to cut the amount of unnecessary supplier interfaces and thereby reducing technical and commercial project risk for offshore wind projects,” said a spokesperson.
