COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Scottish SSEN Transmission has named NKT preferred bidder to supply 525-kV XLPE high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power cable systems for the Western Isles and Spittal-Peterhead offshore HVDC transmission links.
These are part of a major upgrade of the UK’s electricity transmission network needed to help both the UK and Scottish governments meet their 2030 renewable energy targets. The overall project stipulates a single, integrated design to support large-scale delivery of electricity generated from offshore wind, NKT added.
Negotiations are underway concerning an agreement that would provide NKT the securities needed to reserve capacity for the two named projects.
Contracts for the two projects should then follow along with an intended framework agreement for future projects.
