ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands — Van Oord has installed and buried inter-array cables at CrossWind’s Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind park in the Dutch North Sea, 18.5 km from Egmond aan Zee.
The cables have the dual purpose of connecting the offshore wind turbines and transmitting electricity.
Van Oord’s cablelaying vessel Nexus and ROV trencher Dig-It, operated from the Subsea Viking vessel, installed 69 inter-array cables with a total length of 140 km in total.
The company designed a 66-kV inter-array grid for the development, with Twentsche Kabelfabriek supplying the cables. Nexus, equipped with a 5,000-metric-ton capacity cable carousel, laid the cables with Dig-It performing burial to depths of between 1 m and 1.5 m.
Both the trencher’s jetting and chain cutter modes were deployed, used respectively for sandy and harder soils.
CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco, awarded Van Oord a Balance of Plant contract covering the design, engineering, procurement, transport and installation (T&I) of the wind turbine foundations, inter-array cables, plus T&I of the wind turbines.
Earlier this year, the company completed installation of all 70 monopile foundation.
Once completed, Hollandse Kust Noord will have a total installed capacity of 759 MW.
