MADRID, Spain  IberBlue Wind, the joint venture (JV) between Simply Blue Group, Proes Consultores and FF New Energy Ventures, plans to develop the La Pinta floating offshore wind farm off the coasts of Granada and Almeria, southern Spain.

La Pinta, covering a 316-sq km area, is named after one of three caravels used by Christopher Columbus for his first voyage to North America.

The JV plans to install up to 55 x 19-MW wind turbines (990 MW in total) at locations 15-35 km offshore.

IberBlue Wind has submitted the initial project document to Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

It estimates the cost of construction and maintenance of the wind farm at more than Eur2,500 million ($2,717 million) with potential to create more than 3,300 jobs.

IberBlue Wind has opened contacts on the project with the regional government of Andalucía, town halls, associations and other representative bodies in the area concerning the environmental considerations.

Julio Vera, stakeholder engagement and policy director of IberBlue Wind, said, “The coasts of Granada and Almeria have favorable conditions for offshore wind farms, although it will be necessary to reinforce the electricity network in the surrounding area to take all the energy generated."

This will be the JV's second offshore wind farm in Andalucía, following the Nao Victoria project in the Alboran Sea, off the coasts of Malaga and Cadiz, which has a similar installed capacity.

The JV also has proposed to the authorities Botafogo, which would be the first wind farm off Portugal’s Figueira da Foz coast, and the first cross-border offshore wind projects off Spain and Portugal, Juan Sebastián Elcano and Creoula, with a combined installed capacity of about 1.96 GW.
