TOKYO, Japan—ClassNK has issued an approval in principle (AiP) for a conversion plan of a medium-sized self-elevating platform vessel.
This would provide installation of a large wind turbine generator on a semisubmersible floater in a port. The project is a joint development between TOA Corp., NIHON Shipyard and Japan Marine United Corp. (JMU).
Due to a current scarcity of port facilities in Japan for installing a large wind turbine on a foundation, the trio has been investigating conversion of a mid-sized self-elevating platform vessel to serve as a jacked-up tall crane in a port.
The vessel, equipped with a 1,250-t crane and constructed at JMU shipyard, would enable installation of large wind turbines at ports and could promote the expansion of floating offshore wind power generation by providing a wider range of base port options.
ClassNK reviewed the conversion plan in accordance with Part O of the Rules for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships and issued the AiP on verifying conformity to the prescribed requirements.
