EDINBURGH, UK  Thistle Wind Partners (TWP) has initiated seabed surveys for its two ScotWind projects: the 1-GW Ayre floating offshore wind farm east of Orkney, northern Scotland, and the 1-GW Bowdun fixed foundation wind farm off the coast of Aberdeenshire in the North Sea.

G-tec is leading the first phase, geophysical surveys of the seabed at both sites in leasing zones NE2 and E3, and due to continue through October. GAC UK’s Aberdeen and Orkney offices are providing vessel logistics, while Newcastle-based Cathie is performing advisory services.

The survey vessel will cover an area of almost 400 sq km. G-tec specialists will process the data, applying the results to ground modelling studies from October onward, with metocean surveys starting around the same time.

TWP expects to complete the pre-FEED phase for the two projects by mid-2024, and further geophysical and geotechnical studies are planned next year to inform the FEED for the wind farms.

Also, this summer the company will continue the bird and marine mammal studies launched by contractor APEM in March 2022. Final investment decision for both projects could follow in 2028, assuming consents in 2025.
