ZAMUDIO, Spain — Siemens Gamesa will supply 95 SG 14-236 DD wind turbines to ScottishPower Renewables for the 1.4-GW East Anglia 3 wind power project offshore eastern England in the North Sea.
The project is the second of four planned for the 2.9-GW East Anglia Hub development, covering 305 sq km, at its closest point 69 km from the Norfolk coast in the northern part of the East Anglia zone.
Installation is due to start in 2026 and finish by the end of that year.
Siemens Gamesa Offshore CEO Marc Becker said, “In these challenging times, it is encouraging to sign this firm order with ScottishPower Renewables as we jointly move to a more financially sustainable wind industry, but we need the UK government to fully recognize that renewable energy, especially wind generation, is now on the same level of importance as oil and gas and requires similar levels of support to ensure it delivers what the UK needs to reach crucial net zero targets.”
Under a contract signed last year, Siemens Energy will build a converter platform that will collect the alternating current generated by the turbines and convert it to direct current for low-loss transmission to the coast.
A second converter on land will transform the power back to AC so it can feed into the local grid.
The estimated lifespan of the project is 25 years.
Cadeler will transport and install the 95 turbines under a EUR100 million ($108.4 million) contract. The company will deploy one of its O-class vessels featuring a new crane and one of its two newbuild X-class vessels, currently under construction.
The X-class provides a deck space of 5,600 sq m, a payload of more than 17,600 t and main crane capacity of above 2,000 t at 53 m. It can carry and install five sets of 20-plus-MW turbines or seven full 15-MW turbine sets per load.
