DELFT, The Netherlands  Allseas has successfully installed the 900-MW DolWin kappa offshore converter station for TenneT’s DolWin6 offshore grid connection system in the German North Sea.

Dragados Offshore shipyard, located in Cadiz, southern Spain, designed and built the converter station for the project’s general construction contractor, Siemens Energy. It comprises a 5,000-metric-ton foundation jacket and an 11,000-metric-ton topsides containing high-voltage direct current technology.

Pioneering Spirit completed the 12-day installation campaign, which included piling of the jacket foundations, on Sept. 4. This was also Allseas’ first comprehensive offshore wind platform installation.

Allseas’s cargo barge delivered all the components from Cadiz to Rotterdam on Aug. 18, transferring the piles, jacket, topsides and connecting bridge to Pioneering Spirit for onward transport to the installation site.

All components were installed directly from the vessel via its topside and jacket lift systems. The vessel’s 5,000-metric-ton crane was used for driving the 10 foundation piles up to 68 m into the seabed to secure the foundation jacket.

Earlier this year, the vessel performed substation installations for the Hollandse Kust Zuid project in the Dutch North Sea for TenneT and the Saint-Nazaire wind farm off western France.

Allseas is working on new concepts to install the larger next-generation turbines and foundations for offshore wind projects.
