OSLO, Norway – The remit of Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) has been extended to cover renewable energy projects and facilities.

This includes safety and the working environment for CO2 transport and storage and renewable energy production offshore. The PSA is responsible for establishing parameters governing prudent conduct of activity, and following up to ensure compliance.

Norway’s government is now opening the Utsira North offshore region and the southern North Sea II areas for wind farm developments. There is a need, the PSA said, to put in place well-functioning regulations governing safety and the working environment, tailored to risk conditions and to help create predictability for those involved.

Currently the Authority is participating in the Regulatory Forum to establish a common starting point for developing regulations to cover offshore renewable energy.

It also has supervisory responsibility for the Mongstad and Tjeldbergodden plants onshore western Norway which will account for a large proportion of the country’s hydrogen output. New projects are now under review offshore, and the PSA is monitoring plans for potential hydrogen production using offshore wind power.
