HOUSTON – NOV will supply COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry and Cadeler with two GustoMSC NG-20000X self-propelled wind turbine installation jackup vessels (Cadeler X-Class).
The DNV-certified design features 5,600 sq m (60,278 sq ft) of deck space and a carrying capacity of more than 17,600 tons, said to be the industry’s largest. Each vessel can transport and install seven complete 15-MW turbine sets or five sets of 20 MW-plus turbines, higher than could be achieved previously, reducing the number of vessel trips per development.
Other benefits of this arrangement are said to be faster installation speed, improving project economics while also cutting the carbon footprint of the installation process.
NOV will also provide the jacking system that lifts the vessel and cargo above the waterline to install wind turbines, incorporating proprietary regenerative power system technology claimed to deliver provide fuel savings and emission reductions.
The first vessel is contracted for RWE’s 1.4-GW Sofia offshore wind park in the central North Sea. It is due to be delivered in 3Q 2024.
In parallel, NOV is supplying new heavy-lift cranes for Cadeler’s existing O-Class vessels, Wind Orca and Wind Osprey, to handle the next-generation of turbines.
