ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands – Iberdrola has awarded Van Oord a contract for the Baltic Eagle wind farm offshore Germany.
Van Oord will transport and install the foundations and ensure the supply, transport, and installation of inter-array cables.
The company plans to deploy its 8,000-metric ton heavy-lift vessel Svanen to install the 50 foundations and its cable laying vessel Nexus and trencher Dig-It to lay the inter-array cables. The company said it will customize the Dig-It to ensure that the trencher can handle the challenging soft soil conditions in the Baltic Sea.
The offshore works are expected to start in in 2023.
Located 30 km (19 mi) northeast of Rügen island, the 476-MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2024. It is expected to power 475,000 households and save about 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.
Baltic Eagle will be Iberdrola’s second largest offshore wind farm in Germany. The 350-MW Wikinger offshore wind farm was commissioned at the end of 2017. The company’s Baltic Hub in the German Baltic Sea is expected to deliver 826 MW by late 2024. The company plans to increase its installed capacity in Germany to more than 1.1 GW by the end of 2026.
