HELSINKI, FinlandWärtsilä is supplying steerable and tunnel thrusters for two new wind turbine installation vessels under construction for China Three Gorges Corp. (CTGC).

Both will be dedicated to China’s growing offshore wind power sector.

The thruster orders came from CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Co., which is constructing a 2,000-ton wind turbine installation vessel, and China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co., which is building a 3,000-ton heavy lift vessel.

According to Wärtsilä, each of the vessels will have feature WST-32FP main propulsion units with appropriate WTT transverse thruster sizes.

The thrusters are engineered to provide high redundancy for lower energy consumption, the company added, and will comply with regulations concerning the use of environmentally acceptable lubricants.

China is targeting offshore wind power generation capacity of 50 GW by the end of 2029.
