Offshore staff
RICHMOND, Virginia – Ørsted and Eversource have contracted Dominion Energy’s wind turbine installation vessel Charybdis for the construction of two planned offshore wind farms in the northeast US.
The Charybdis, which is expected to be sea ready by late 2023, will first be deployed from State Pier in New London, Connecticut, to support the construction of Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind, both under joint development by Ørsted and Eversource. Once complete, the two projects are expected to generate more than 1.6 GW of renewable energy.
The 880-MW Sunrise Wind project is expected to be developed 30 mi (48 km) east of Montauk Point, Long Island, and operational in 2024. It is projected to power more than 520,000 homes in New York.
The 704-MW Revolution Wind project is expected to provide 304 MW of offshore wind power to Connecticut and 400 MW to Rhode Island. It is planned to be developed 15 mi (24 km) south of Rhode Island and 32 mi (51 km) southeast of Connecticut.
The charter’s terms will allow the vessel, subject to state regulatory approval, to support construction of Dominion Energy’s 2.6-GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project off the coast of Virginia Beach. It is expected to be completed in 2026.
The approximately $500-million vessel will operate as part of Dominion Energy’s Contracted Assets segment.
The 472-ft (144-m) long vessel is under construction at Keppel AmFELS’s shipyard in Brownsville, Texas.
