PARISTotal has signed an agreement with wpd to acquire a 23% stake in Yunlin Holding, which owns the Yunlin wind farm offshore Taiwan, 200 km (124 mi) southwest of Taipei.

The project, which is currently under construction, will provide production capacity of 640 MW and has a 20-year power purchase agreement with the state-owned utility Taipower of $250/MWh for the first 10 years and $125/MWh for the following 10 years.

Total will pay to wpd a consideration based on its share of past costs.

The wind farm location is 10 km (6.2 mi) offshore in water depths of 7-35 m (23-115 ft), and will feature 80 wind turbines with a unit capacity of 8 MW.

Construction is due to be completed in 2022. The project will produce 2.4 TWh of renewable electricity per year, serving the needs of 605,000 households.

Marine works are under way with the first wind turbine installed last week.

Taiwan aims to generate 20% of its electricity from renewables by 2025 and to develop a local wind power industry. Total views this as one of the priority regions for its offshore wind power development in Asia.

Current owners of the project are wpd (48%), Electricity Generating Public Co. (25%), and a consortium of Japanese investors (27%), Sojitz, Chugoku Electric Power, Chudenko and Shikoku Electric Power.
