ABERDEEN, UK – Global Offshore has completed the cable installation campaign at Vattenfall’s Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in the Danish sector of the Baltic Sea.
The initial phase of work, which was completed last year, saw the company use its multi-purpose PLP240 pre-lay plough, mobilized on the Havila Jupiter, to carry out route clearance totaling about 158 km (98 mi).
The second phase, which began in September 2020, included the installation of 72 inter-array cables, using the Normand Clipper, and the jet trenching of 72 routes using the Q1400 aboard sister vessel, Normand Cutter.
Following the cable installations, the PLP240 returned to site to conduct backfilling operations, the first operation of its kind on an inter-array grid, the company claimed.
Before the start of the second phase, Global Offshore upgraded the Normand Clipper for power cable work. It added a 4,000-metric ton cable carousel, two 15-metric ton cable tensioners, a 25-metric ton quadrant deployment frame, and a fully integrated control system to the 127.5-m (418-ft) cable-laying vessel.
Located 15-40 km (9.3-25 mi) off the Danish coast, the 600-MW Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.
