STAVANGER, Norway – Equinor has awarded two subsea construction contracts for the Northern Lights carbon capture project in the northern Norwegian North Sea.

Subsea 7 will perform engineering, fabrication, and installation of the 100-km (62-mi) CO2 pipeline that will run from the intermediate storage site at the Energiparken in Øygarden, western Norway, to the injection well in the North Sea.

In addition, the company will install a 36-km (22.3-mi) umbilical that will connect the injection well to the Oseberg field center, which will operate the subsea injection facilities.

Subsea 7 will manage the project from its offices in Stavanger, with fabrication of the pipelines conducted at the company’s spoolbase in Vigra, Norway. Offshore operations will take place during 2022 and 2023.

Aibel has the NOK140-million ($16.11-million) EPCI contract for the Northern Lights subsea control system on the Oseberg A platform.

The company will be responsible for all upgrades required on the platform to pull in and operate the umbilical system connecting to the Northern Lights subsea facilities.

Aibel will manage the program from offices in Bergen and Stavanger, and prefabrication at its yard in Haugesund. The work should be completed in late 2023.

Northern Lights is part of the Norwegian full-scale carbon capture and storage project “Langskip” (Longship).
