TRONDHEIM, Norway – Kongsberg Maritime will supply positioning and monitoring equipment to Equinor’s Hywind Tampen floating wind farm in the Norwegian North Sea, under a contract awarded by Wood.

The 88-MW installation comprising 11 floating wind turbines will power platforms at the Snorre and Gullfaks fields.

Kongsberg Maritime’s Motion Reference Unit will monitor roll, pitch, yaw and heave motion, informing the blade trimming system to ensure that the turbine does not become overloaded in strong winds and therefore at risk of instability.

The company’s DPS position reference system will use all available global navigation satellite system infrastructure to deliver continuously available, reliable position information, also monitoring the location of the turbines relative to the seabed.

According to Kongsberg Maritime, this should help ensure secure, safe, and optimal positioning for each unit within the wind farm.

Finally, the AIS AQ610 base station should assist marine traffic situational awareness and visibility to other vessels. All the equipment is designed for remote access and monitoring.
