LONDON – The Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Alok Sharma, has granted development consent to Ørsted for the Hornsea Three offshore wind farm in the UK North Sea.
Located about 121 km (75 mi) off the Norfolk coast and 160 km (99 mi) off the Yorkshire coast, the 2.6-GW Hornsea Three wind farm is expected to power more than 2 million UK homes.
According to Ørsted, up to 231 offshore wind turbines will be located within a 696 sq km (269 sq mi) area.
In August 2015, the company acquired the rights to develop the Hornsea Zone from SMart Wind Ltd., who was originally awarded the zone in The Crown Estate Round 3 bid process. To date, Hornsea One and Hornsea Two have both received planning consent, with Hornsea One now operational and Hornsea Two currently under construction.
On May 14, 2018, the company submitted a development consent order application for a third project in the zone, Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm.
The application was accepted by the Planning Inspectorate in June 2018 and was granted consent on Dec. 31, 2020.
