MUNICH, Germany – MHI Vestas has contracted Siemens Energy to deliver 114 low-loss 66-kV distribution transformers for the Seagreen wind farm offshore Scotland.
The fluid immersed distribution transformers will complement MHI Vestas’ 114 10-MW turbines that the company will provide to SSE Renewables’ wind farm, 27 km (17 mi) from the Angus coastline.
The transformers will be filled with biodegradable ester insulation fluid.
The low-loss distribution transformers were designed to meet high efficiency requirements, the company said. After commissioning, they will convert the voltage from the produced electricity to the 66 kV needed to feed the offshore transmission substation before going to mainland with an even higher voltage.
With an installed capacity of 1,075 MW, the wind farm is expected to be Scotland’s largest source of renewable energy and power about 1.3 million homes.
Seagreen is expected to be operational by 2022/2023.
