FREDERICIA, Denmark – Ørsted has fully commissioned the 752-MW Borssele 1 & 2 offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea.
This is the company’s first offshore wind farm in the Netherlands. It is also said to be the largest offshore wind farm in the Netherlands and the second largest operating offshore wind farm in the world.
Located 23 km (14 mi) off the coast of Zeeland, Borssele 1 & 2 is expected to provide enough electricity to power one million Dutch households. Water depths range from 14 to 36 m (46 to 118 ft).
Sif and EEW SPC built the 94 monopiles. Bladt and EEW OSB built the 94 transition pieces.
DEME Offshore’s jackup vessel Innovation installed the foundations. The company’s sister vessels Sea Installer and Sea Challenger installed the Siemens Gamesa 8-MW turbines.
Van Oord’s cable-laying vessel Nexus installed the cables that Nexans fabricated.
According to Flemming Thomsen, Ørsted’s Senior Programme Director for Borssele 1 & 2, the wind farm was installed in less than nine months.
