LONDON – The Carbon Trust has opened the fourth stage of the Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA), which is supported by EnBW, Equinor, Ørsted, RWE Renewables, ScottishPower Renewables, Shell, SSE Renewables, and Vattenfall.

Since 2008 the OWA has undertaken more than 180 R&D projects internationally. According to the Carbon Trust, analysis in 2018 suggested that OWA-supported innovations could deliver a further 15% reduction in levelized cost of energy over a project’s lifetime, equivalent to a £34-billion ($44.25-billion) saving for the European offshore wind industry, based on 2030 build-out targets.

The next phase of the accelerator will focus on continued cost reduction of offshore wind, developing industry best practice and new industry standards, and supporting the international expansion of offshore wind.

Target areas are access and logistics, cables, electrical systems, foundations, and energy yield and performance.
